Dear all,

The Diversity Matters luncheon series returns THIS THURDSAY! This is a monthly forum where faculty and staff explore topics and share expertise with the aim of ensuring an inclusive campus for all. This month:

Diversity Matters Luncheon: Difficult Conversation in Response to Critical Incidents

(for faculty and staff)

A panel of faculty and staff will share their own strategies, successes, failures and quandaries around responding to challenging moments like this in the classroom and with student support beyond the classroom.

As always, you are free to come and go as your schedule permits, but know that we will begin the program shortly after 12pm.

12:00 PM - 12:45 PM Wellness - Zumba

The Zumba® program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program that will blow you away. Originally created by Alberto “Beto” Perez in Columbia, Zumba® is a Latin inspired dance fitness class that combines interval training sessions with fast and slow rhythms to sculpt and tone your body while burning fat.  Our goal is simple: We want you to want to work out, to love working out, and to get hooked.  Zumba® fanatics achieve long-term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in every calorie-burning, body-energizing class.  This class is perfect for all fitness levels and no dance experience is necessary!

Zumba®Toning - For those who want to party, but put extra emphasis on toning and sculpting to define those muscles!  It works by utilizing the challenge of adding resistance by using Zumba®Toning Sticks or light weights, which helps you focus on specific muscle groups, so you (and your muscles) stay engaged!  By using lightweight maraca-like toning sticks or light weights, Zumba Toning enhances sense of rhythm and coordination, while toning target zones, including arms, core and lower body.

So, join Dawn George, certified dance and Zumba instructor, as she leads you through the latest in fitness fun.  What are you waiting for?  Ditch the workout....join the party!

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Wellness Webinar - The 411 on Fats
Are you confused about fats? Fats are probably one of the more misunderstood macro-nutrients. Higher in calories per gram than protein and carbohydrates and long-linked to heart disease, we have been told to avoid them at all costs. But the research shows us that fats are actually important to our health.  However, there are different kinds of fat that benefit your health in different ways and some that do not benefit our health.  Join us for an important discussion on dietary fats: the different kinds, good fats vs. bad fats, where to find them, and why it is important to have fats in your diet.

Instructor Julianne McLaughlin is a Certified Weight Loss and Nutrition Counselor, a graduate of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, Personal Trainer, Pilates, and Spin Instructor.  Find out more about Julianne and Whole New U at www.wholenewu.org

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM Supporting DACA & Undocumented Students [Webinar]

WEBINAR: DACA Program to End: Support Your Undocumented Students Legally,
Socio-emotionally and Academically

Tuesday, September 26th • 2-3:30 pm (ET)
Olin Hall, Room 101

Hear from expert presenters Stephanie Delia – Supervising Attorney at the CUNY Citizenship Now!, City College Immigration Center – and Tatyana Kleyn – Associate Professor and Program Director in the Bilingual Education and TESOL programs at The City College of New York – on the implications of DACA being rescinded and how it will be phased out over time, what this means for your students with DACA and the legal options your undocumented students may have available to them.

The stress and fear for undocumented students is real. They may not be able to finish their education due to financial hardships and stressors, they may not be able work in the career they have been studying towards, and they will become vulnerable to deportation. Get the facts so you can support them with the phasing out of DACA – legally, socio-emotionally and academically – through March 5, 2018 and beyond.

Sponsored by Diversity & Inclusion, Office of the President and the Glavin Office of Multicultural & International Education.

RSVP helpful but not required.  Light refreshments served.

All Day A Coming of Age: Paintings by LaShonda Cooks '10 and Jamaal Eversley '10 (Multi-Day Event)

This joint exhibition features two new series by two 2010 alumni: The Pursuit of Womanhood by LaShonda Cooks and Smells like Teen Spirit by Jamaal Eversley. Cooks has found strength and solace in painting women who define and defy societal roles. In this exhibition she combines her paintings with text collage to create a large mixed-media installation depicting her favorite female identifying influencers and icons, from familial to famous. Eversley’s bold paintings and drawings integrate influences of Geometric Abstraction and Pop Art with the West Indian palette of Barbados. His compositions are driven by the fictional characters that inhabit them; the focal character in this series is Eversley’s alter ego, Spencer Ward, a nerd in pursuit of love.

ARTISTS TALK AND RECEPTION:
