All Day From Root to Sky: Sachiko Akiyama (Multi-Day Event)

Artist Talk and Reception: Wednesday, April 5, 5:00 P.M.

Sachiko Akiyama’s work brings together artistic influences of Brancusi, Egyptian funerary sculptures, medieval Christian woodcarvings, and contemporary sculptors with the artist’s personal experiences and Japanese heritage, notably Japanese fairy tales.  Her carvings convey a sense of centeredness and direct connections to nature that opens up the door to creation mythologies and other mystical possibilities. The figures’ relationships to flora, fauna, and the elements speak metaphorically to the ways we find meaning in our lives and meet the challenges of our surroundings.

Social media has enormously shifted how the world communicates and allows connections and transfer of information in hyperspeed. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other platforms create virtual online communities and instantly share news and data. These platforms also fulfill a critical role in spreading awareness and campaigning around the most pressing societal concerns. How does social media impact in the fight against human trafficking? Are platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others effective in generating real knowledge about the issue? Is it possible for 140 characters to start a social movement around combatting human trafficking? Can these platforms be true vehicles of social change? The Babson Alumni Club of Tennessee invites you to attend the Bunker Brews networking event with Bunker Labs.  Bunker Labs is a national not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization helping military veteran entrepreneurs bring their business ideas to action. May's Bunker Brews will highlight the Babson Alumni Club of Tennessee and Babson College as the top institution for entrepreneurial education.

This event will feature a panel discussion with Collin Mooney, an Army Veteran and former Tennessee Titan-turned-entrepreneur, and Blake Hogan, Executive Director of Bunker Labs Nashville.
