Artist Talk and Reception: Wednesday, April 5, 5:00 P.M.

Sachiko Akiyama’s work brings together artistic influences of Brancusi, Egyptian funerary sculptures, medieval Christian woodcarvings, and contemporary sculptors with the artist’s personal experiences and Japanese heritage, notably Japanese fairy tales.  Her carvings convey a sense of centeredness and direct connections to nature that opens up the door to creation mythologies and other mystical possibilities. The figures’ relationships to flora, fauna, and the elements speak metaphorically to the ways we find meaning in our lives and meet the challenges of our surroundings.

As a fitness professional of 17 years, who was diagnosed with MS, she began to focus on cleaning her life of sugars and processed foods and stopped dieting.  She has spent several years learning how to create delicious nutritious foods that doesn’t deprive you of taste or require supplements. Babson volunteers will teach middle school children of the housing authority how to organize and run a business.

In Vinyasa-style yoga, “Ujjayi” breath is connected to movement which creates a flow of poses that encourages relaxation in the body as well as awareness of the mind. This class will shift your focus from everyday life to present physical sensations. The poses will strengthen, detoxify, and open the body, leaving you feeling toned, invigorated, and inspired.
