End Day 02-10 Cuba: Alumni Trip to Cuba (Multi-Day Event)

February 10-15, 2019 

Travel to Cuba with Babson College!

  • Engage in dialogue with members of the National Union of Cuban Jurists (UNJC) and the secretary of the Cuban Society of International Law, Dorys Quintana, where you will learn about her time spent drafting legislation outlining the rights of employees, new entrepreneurial businesses and new foreign investment policies.
  • Interact with members of El Proyecto Paloma, a project dedicated to providing support and empowering victims of domestic abuse and transgender youth through dance, therapy, film, and other art.
    Visit Finca Yondra, an urban organic farm, to discuss urban farming cooperatives and tour the farm and medicinal gardens.
  • Stroll through the cobblestone streets of Havana, and visit the Felix Varela Cultural Center and a graphic arts workshop to engage with professors and students from the Cuba Emprende Project.
  • Enjoy a performance by the Habana Compas Dance Company at its headquarters and talk with some of the performers after the show.
  • Meet with representatives of EspacioCuba, a real estate agency which was established in 2012 after a law was passed allowing the sale and purchase of properties between Cuban residents.
  • Spend time in the eco-community of Las Terrazas, an estate and nature reserve, a little more than an hour south west of Havana.
  • Experience part of Havana’s nightlife at Fábrica de Arte Cubano, a warehouse turned gallery and performance venue.
  • Visit one of Havana’s tobacco factories for a tour, and meet with cigar experts and rollers to discuss the economic importance that tobacco has played in Cuban history.

10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Community Action Program: Cradles to Crayons

This nonprofit organization provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play. Babson students will sort and put together care packages of clothes, toys, and books for children in the greater Boston area.

Fridays, 10:00-3:00 pm. Babson students will leave campus around 9:30 am and return around 3:30 pm.

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Community Action Program: Friends of the Homeless of the South Shore
This agency consists of a food pantry, a clothing closet, a furniture bank and housing for homeless families.Volunteers will assist with a variety of task from yard work to painting to repair work on shelters.

Students will leave at 9:00am and return by 2:00pm.

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Wellness-Power Yoga with Lauren Shaffer

Lauren Shaffer found yoga in 2011 as a stressed out college student in need of a calm and quiet spot to unwind. As a teacher, her mission is to provide students with a safe, sacred space with her guidance, knowledge and tools offered as support. She loves to teach a variety of classes from restorative to power, all of which tie breath with movement to a well thought out and sequenced flow. She includes the solid backbones of the practice—like functional movement and energetic organization—always presented with lightheartedness as she accommodate all levels. She also loves to bring some fun into her classes. Lauren’s focus is to ensure her students leave with their bodies feeling stronger, as well as a clearer mind helping them take on the rest of their day with a smile!

4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Community Action Program: Musterfield BELA Program

The Entrepreneurial Leadership Programs takes place at the Musterfield neighborhood of the Framingham Housing Authority. A housing authority is section 8 housing, a state or federally funded program aimed to assist low-income families pay for rent. The Entrepreneurial Leadership Programs focus on mentoring 7th-9th graders in developing everyday life habits that can lead them to be successful entrepreneurs and to think about entrepreneurship in a new way.

Fridays 4:00-5:30 pm. Babson students will leave campus around 3:40 pm and return around 5:50 pm.
