All Day 02-10 Cuba: Alumni Trip to Cuba (Multi-Day Event)

ALUMNI TRIP: CUBA'S SPIRIT OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP
February 10-15, 2019 

Travel to Cuba with Babson College!

Highlights
  • Engage in dialogue with members of the National Union of Cuban Jurists (UNJC) and the secretary of the Cuban Society of International Law, Dorys Quintana, where you will learn about her time spent drafting legislation outlining the rights of employees, new entrepreneurial businesses and new foreign investment policies.
  • Interact with members of El Proyecto Paloma, a project dedicated to providing support and empowering victims of domestic abuse and transgender youth through dance, therapy, film, and other art.
    Visit Finca Yondra, an urban organic farm, to discuss urban farming cooperatives and tour the farm and medicinal gardens.
  • Stroll through the cobblestone streets of Havana, and visit the Felix Varela Cultural Center and a graphic arts workshop to engage with professors and students from the Cuba Emprende Project.
  • Enjoy a performance by the Habana Compas Dance Company at its headquarters and talk with some of the performers after the show.
  • Meet with representatives of EspacioCuba, a real estate agency which was established in 2012 after a law was passed allowing the sale and purchase of properties between Cuban residents.
  • Spend time in the eco-community of Las Terrazas, an estate and nature reserve, a little more than an hour south west of Havana.
  • Experience part of Havana’s nightlife at Fábrica de Arte Cubano, a warehouse turned gallery and performance venue.
  • Visit one of Havana’s tobacco factories for a tour, and meet with cigar experts and rollers to discuss the economic importance that tobacco has played in Cuban history.

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM ENTREPRENEURIAL THOUGHT & ACTION (ET&A™) SIMULATION

ET&A is a great way to experiment with your ideas through taking one action at a time. Come experience the Entrepreneurial Leadership Online simulation created by our very own Babson faculty. First, we’ll try our hand at the assessment, then review the essentials of ET&A before trying the simulation once again to see how utilizing ET&A improves our score.

Dates & Times: Two sessions are available – Thursday Jan 24 or Wednesday Feb 13, both from 11:00am to 12:00pm

12:00 PM - 12:45 PM Wellness - Adult Cross Training (A.C.T)
Join Babson’s own Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for a training program which will heighten mental and physical fortitude through flexibility, balance, coordination, conditioning, strength, power and agility drills, exercises and routines.


Please note that anyone participating in any of the Be Well@Babson programs must sign a waiver before beginning any program or activity.  Classes may fill up and are assigned on a first come, first serve basis.  All of the Be Well@Babson programs are limited to Babson staff and faculty only and there are no exceptions that can be made.

12:00 PM - 12:45 PM Wellness - Power Yoga

Power vinyasa yoga builds physical and mental strength and flexibility. Find your mind body connection as you link breath to movement in a fast-paced, energizing class. This class is accessible to most levels of fitness. Prior experience with yoga is recommended but not required.   These classes will be taught by Michele McLaughlin and Tracy Buckley.

3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)
During tax season, students from Babson College assist families with preparations to help file their taxes three times a week.
3:30 PM - 5:30 PM Community Action Program: Barton Road After School Program

The Barton Road Afterschool Program takes place at the Wellesley Housing Authority. A housing authority is section 8 housing, a state or federally funded program aimed to assist low-income families pay for rent. The Afterschool Programs focus on providing mentorship through after school homework help, as well as providing activities that are both safe and fun for the children who live at the Housing Authorities. 

Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 pm. Babson students will leave campus around 3:15 pm and return around 5:45 pm.

5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Day: Mónica Ramírez

Mónica Ramírez is a co-founder of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, or the National Farmworkers Women's Alliance, and she created the first legal project in the U.S. focused on representing farmworker women in legal cases involving sexual harassment and other forms of gender discrimination. She has dedicated her life to ending gender-based violence and unjust treatment in the workplace, along with achieving gender justice, especially for the most marginalized women, including farmworkers, Latinas, and immigrants. Mónica rallies people from all walks of life to promote gender equity in the workplace and in politics – while inspiring audiences to find their own voice, forge their own leadership journey, and use their power to make change.

The Babson Community celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This event, now in its 16th year initiates and continues conversations about the realization of King's vision of justice, equality, and peace in our own community and in the world at large by recognizing students and faculty through leadership and creativity awards and a keynote speaker.

Preparing a child for the college admission process can be an exciting but daunting undertaking. Join Courtney Minden, Babson's Dean of Undergraduate Admission & Financial Aid, to gain the skills needed to successfully navigate the college search process. This session is specifically designed for all parents of high-school aged students who will enter the college search process; the content will not be limited to those considering an application to Babson.

Event Cost: $15, a portion of which supports expanding opportunities for Babson students through scholarships and financial aid.
